Silas Deane letters 1767-1785

Silas Deane (1737-1789) was an American merchant, politician and diplomat who served as a delegate to the Continental Congress. He later repudiated the Revolution and was branded a traitor, though he was exonerated after his death. The collection consists of letters from Deane to various parties, including Sally Webb, Thomas Mumford, Thomas Cushing, and Samuel Blachley Webb. The letters concern both personal matters and issues relating to the Continental Congress and the American revolutionary cause

Samuel Blachley Webb was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut on December 15, 1753. His mother later married Silas Deane, whom Webb served as private secretary.
